Protecting a Standby Generator in a Texas Freeze

February 2021 taught Texas what a freeze does to the grid. It also taught generator owners a quieter lesson: most cold-weather generator failures are battery failures wearing a costume. Here's how to make sure yours starts on the coldest morning of the year.

Why Cold Defeats Generators

Two effects collide at exactly the wrong moment. As temperatures fall, a lead-acid battery delivers less cranking power. At the same time, cold engine oil thickens, so the starter has to work harder to turn the engine over. The battery is weakest precisely when the job is hardest — which is why a unit that started happily all summer can crank slowly, fault out, or sit silent during a hard freeze. Generac designs cold-weather accessories around this exact problem, and recommends them for generators installed where temperatures regularly fall below 32°F.

The Cold-Weather Kit

Generac's cold-weather accessories for air-cooled home standby units (per Generac Support's published guidance) are thermostatically controlled — they switch on as temperatures drop and off as things warm, so they're installed once and forgotten:

Kyle, Buda, and San Marcos don't live below freezing — but Uri spent days there, and a single multi-day freeze every few years is exactly the scenario these homes bought generators for. If you're speccing a new installation, ask for the cold-weather kit on the quote; it's a small line item next to the cost of the system. If your existing unit doesn't have one, a dealer can retrofit the warmers that fit your model.

Battery First, Every Fall

Exercise Settings: Your Weekly Readiness Report

The weekly exercise is more than a warm-up — it's the unit proving, every week, that it can start. Before a forecast freeze, open the controller or the monitoring app and confirm two things: the exercise is scheduled, and recent exercises completed without faults. A unit that exercised cleanly last week is very likely ready. A unit that silently stopped exercising in November — dead battery, charger fault — is the risk, and the freeze is the worst time to discover it. If a fault is sitting on the controller, clear the cause before the cold arrives, not during it.

Fuel in a Freeze

Around the Unit

Liquid-cooled units: most Hays County homes run air-cooled generators, which have no coolant to protect. If yours is liquid-cooled, coolant level and condition are part of its annual service — confirm both are in order before winter, per your model's manual.

During the Freeze

Let it do its job. If the outage stretches past a day, the extended-run rhythm applies even in the cold: shut down briefly every 24 hours of continuous running to check the oil (our runtime guide walks through the safe sequence), keep an eye on the app for faults, and don't approach the unit in dangerous conditions just to inspect it.

Cold-weather accessory descriptions and the below-32°F recommendation follow Generac Support's published guidance, "What is a Generac Cold Weather Kit?" Battery specification references are to Generac's Guardian Series specification sheet. Your model's manual and your installer govern your unit.
